Failures of Obama Presidency: Rock Star President Delivers Rock Bottom Results

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

When he announced he was running for president, Obama instantly became the news media and Hollywood’s darling, the John F. Kennedy of his generation. But reality is much different than fiction and President Obama may go down in history as having one of the most failed administrations. Despite his poor track record of government spending to heal a sickly America, Obama announced yet another government program this week.

Under the auspices of We Can’t Wait, Obama announced Home Affordable Refinance Program (HARP) in Las Vegas, the nation’s foreclosure capitol. HARP is supposed to help homeowners with loans backed by Freddie and Fannie refinance to lower rates, even if borrowers are underwater on their mortgages—owing more than the homes are worth.

This newest and biggest idea from team Obama won’t work because his $50 billion Home Affordable Modification Program known as HAMP didn’t work either. Obama boasted HAMP would prevent 4 million Americans avoid foreclosure with lower monthly payments.  To date Treasury claims about 700,000 have been helped but the default rate for HAMP borrowers was estimated to be as high as 65%.

The problem is most of these people should never have had these loans in the first place and the government sponsored enterprises Fannie and Freddie fueled the housing crisis by encouraging lax lending. Instead of putting a band aid on a problem, the Obama administration should allow the foreclosure process to work itself through. Fannie and Freddie are also part of the problem. Both own 70% of all home loans; taxpayers had to bail them out to the tune of $160 million and if they refinance these bad loans under HARP, taxpayers will be on the hook for more money because these borrowers will likely demonstrate a high risk of default like their HAMP peers.

Obama refuses to learn from his mistakes and continues to obsessively push a spending agenda even Senate Democrats refuse to pass (budget, jobs bill, etc.) The Simpson-Bowles Debt Reduction Commission, created by Obama, concluded the nation’s debt of $14 trillion is “unsustainable” and was “driven in large part by two wars and a slew of fiscally irresponsible policies.”

Obama ignored the commission’s proposals including: simplifying the tax code, Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare reform. From Hope and Change, Change We Can Believe In to We Can’t Wait, Obama is full of catchy phrases and condemnations of millionaires, billionaires and those awful Republicans who won’t let him have his way. But what Obama is short on is successes.

Obama has been the architect of one failed, costly program after another. His scorecard as president doesn’t beckon lots of HOPE.  Here’s a smattering of highlights:

  • Presided over the worst Recession since the Great Depression
  • Highest unemployment in decades: 9.1%; Highest black unemployment since 1984: 16.1%; black teen unemployment at 45%
  • First downgrade of United States Credit Rating from AAA-AA-plus
  • Rise inpeople on food stamps historic high of 45.8 million an increase of 34% from 2009.
  • Median wealth of whites 20 times greater than blacks: average black household had $5,677 of wealth in 2009 compared to $113,149 for the average white household
  • HAMP: $50 billion
  • Colossal Stimulus: $787 billion, which didn’t stimulate jobs or the economy
  • Cash for Clunkers:  $3 billion
  • Cash for Caulkers: $6 billion
  • Proposed Jobs Bill: $447 billion, Senate Democrats won’t pass
  • National Debt: $14 trillion; 62% of GDP and reach 185% by 2035
  • Government Spending: 24% of GDP expected to 50% by 2038
  • Income Taxes: Top 5% earners pay 59% of taxes
  • Americans who pay no taxes: 51%
  • New Regulations 2009-2011 :75 new regulation, 1827 rules amended; Cost of new regulations: $1.75 Trillion annually
  • 2012 Federal Budget proposed by Obama : $3.73 Trillion

With a record like this, it’s hard to fathom how Democrats can keep propping up Obama and his failed agenda.  No wonder Americans are angry; 40% disapprove of the job Obama is doing compared to a slim 18% who approve of his performance, which is exactly why WE the PEOPLE CAN’T WAIT to vote Obama out of office in 2012.

Maxine Waters to Obama: Can You Say Black?

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

One wonders if Obama suddenly will find his blackness when he loses the black vote in 2012. It’s beyond me why 90% of black Americans continue to support him when his policies have made their lives worse. Black unemployment is 16% compared to the national average of 9.1%, under George W. Bush black unemployment was 11.5%. According to the Department of Labor, black unemployment is the highest since 1972 when government began tracking it.

More blacks also have lost their homes to foreclosures. This disproportionate misfortune hitting blacks adds up to disappearing black wealth. The Pew Research Center found the average wealth of white households is 20 times more than blacks. But does any black person in their right mind expect a black agenda from Obama when as Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) highlighted recently Obama and his staff have trouble uttering the word “black.”

I never thought I would be praising Rep. Maxine Waters or defending a policy initiative of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) but I am. Waters aka “don’t mess with blacks anymore” has become the de facto spokesperson for the CBC. Waters unleashed her rage and that of her colleagues at Obama for dismissing the concerns of black Americans, 95% of which voted for him. Apparently, team Obama fears getting too black because he might alienate more white voters from his flock.

It’s taken the CBC three years and multiple snubs from the Obama White House to finally attempt to hold Obama accountable for policies which have failed their constituents. Better late than never. (When Richard Nixon was president, the 13 lone CBC members walked out of Nixon’s 1971 State of the Union because Nixon refused to meet with them.) Waters joined other members for the CBC’s nationwide For the People jobs tour targeting Miami, Detroit, Los Angeles and Atlanta where unemployment, particularly black unemployment, is acute.

The goal of the tour is to connect the jobless with employers looking to hire and create 10,000 jobs. Not only should President Obama have “dreamed” up such a jobs plan a long time ago but frankly Democrats and Republicans also should have thought of this.

Throughout the jobs tour, Waters has been in rare form. In Detroit, Waters skewered Obama for not having a jobs plan, not wanting to step foot in black communities and called the highest unemployment rate among blacks in 25 years “unconscionable.”

My favorite “Maxine Moment” so far is Monday, August 22nd when during a Miami jobs tour stop at a black church Waters excoriated Obama official Don Graves for avoiding using the word “black” when he said “certain communities have been hit harder” than others by unemployment. Waters bit back “Let me hear you say black.” NAACP Miami president Bishop Victor Curry punctuated Waters’ point, explaining when presidents Eisenhower, Johnson and Kennedy were in office, blacks held them accountable and “blacks ought to make him do it” make Obama work for the black vote.

Rep. Waters deserves praise from black liberals for reminding Obama that while “he” may want to act race neutral, his disgruntled black base, who voted en masse for him, is hardly “the colorblind” type. Never has a president in US history run from his race like Obama has fled from his blackness. Obama has never uttered the word black or African-American even during the controversy over the arrest of Prof. Henry Louis Gates.

The sad reality is with each passing day it appears Obama refuses to go into black communities, plagued by above average unemployment because he’s afraid that blackness might rub off on him and actually remind Americans he is the first black president of the United States. But would this be such an awful thing? How bad will things have to get for blacks under Obama before they will vote for something different?

Congressional Black Caucus Gets Black on Obama

Friday, August 19th, 2011

It’s about time! After three years of silence, the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) is finally unleashing its outrage at the nation’s first black president and holding him accountable for policies which have disproportionately failed black Americans. Compared to whites and other minority groups, more blacks are unemployed under Obama and more blacks have lost their homes to foreclosure.

While the national unemployment rate is 9.1%, the unemployment rate for blacks is 16% and keeps climbing. Urban cities are plagued with even higher rates of black unemployment. For example, Detroit and Brooklyn’s rate is 50% and some areas of Washington, DC are 30%.

Fed up with Obama dismissing black Americans and conveniently forgetting 95% blacks voted for him in 2008, the CBC launched jobs tour “For the People” to help blacks find over 10,000 jobs. Admittedly, I’m not a fan of the CBC and think it’s power as a group is marginal but this is an example of the CBC living up to its 1969 mission of using its political might to address the concerns of blacks citizens.

At the Detroit jobs tour stop, Rep. Maxine Waters , a doyenne of the CBC, suddenly found her voice of condemnation:

“We want to give the President every opportunity to show what he can do and show what he is prepared to lead on… But our people are hurting. The unemployment is unconscionable. We don’t know what the strategy is. We don’t know why — on this trip he’s on now — he’s not in any black communities.”

Madame Waters isn’t the only CBC member displaying public outrage. Rep. John Conyers, the second longest serving member of the US House of Representatives is urging Americans to participate in a jobs protest in front of White House September 20, 2011. Crew of 42 blog does a terrific job of chronicling the actions and legislative record of CBC members, including its lone GOP member Rep. Allen West.

Of course liberals are quick to ask what policies or bills have Republicans introduced to help blacks get jobs or for that matter address other problems plaguing blacks such as the education gap and high incarceration rates? On jobs, the House Republicans passed 10 job creating bills House, which have been stalled in the Senate.

Republican policies or ideas to “fix” the high number of blacks in prison or blacks dropping out of high school are called the ideas of promoting the family, marriage and the bootstrap policies of individual responsibility. The way for blacks close the education gap and prevent high rates of imprisonment is for young black women to stop having babies out of wedlock and for young black men to take responsibility for fatherhood. These are problems that government can’t fix. Liberals and blacks need to stop asking what government can do for blacks and start asking the question what can blacks do for themselves.

It is quite evident so called “progressive,” Great Society policies of social welfare have only contributed to the economic enslavement and decline of blacks as a race when compared to whites. Laura Ingraham recently interviewed Rep. Allen West about this sudden anger at Obama rising up in blacks and West mused Democrats have always taken the black vote for granted and this modern slavery is nothing new.

“The laughable, hypocrisy is the Big Black Bus isn’t going into the black community. When you had unemployment 16.3% in July and dropped to 15.95% in August, that’s not in the right direction. You have this 21st century plantation that has been out there where the Democrat Party has forever taken the Black vote for granted and you have established certain black leaders who are nothing more than the overseers of that plantation. And now the people on that plantation are upset because they’ve been disregarded, disrespected and their concerns are not cared about.”

One would think it would be the role of the president to launch a jobs tour since suddenly job creation is a priority. Curiously, in 2009 when the unemployment was soaring, Obama’s priority wasn’t creating jobs but rather creating $1 trillion Obamacare. It’s astonishing that as the CBC hits the road with a jobs tour that will travel cities nationwide throughout August with 100 employers offering 10,000 jobs along the way, Obama launched a three day Rural Tour to promote job growth in rural white America because he’s popularity is fading among white voters. Tells you where Obama’s priorities are and it ain’t with blacks. If blacks stupidly vote for Obama in droves again in 2012, they deserve the fate that awaits them. Obama’s bus never pulled into black communities and never will. Blacks need to start driving their own bus.

NAACP School Daze

Monday, June 6th, 2011

The National Association for the ADVANCEMENT of Colored People, emphasis on the word “advancement,”claims “for 102 years, the NAACP has fought to ensure that all our children have access to high-quality public education.” If this is indeed true, then why would the NAACP, which used to be the most revered civil rights organization for black Americans, throw New York City black kids under the bus to save unionized teachers’ jobs and keep failing schools open?

In May to the shock and awe of thousands of New York City parents, the NAACP locked arms with the United Federation of Teachers (emphasis on union) and filed a lawsuit in the State Supreme Court to stop the city from closing 22 poor performing schools and giving 20 charter schools space inside public schools.

After 2,500 charter school parents and students protested in Harlem last week, blasting the NAACP, it wrote an op-ed arguing that allowing charter school students to use available space in NYC schools “impedes learning” or “tears at the fabric of communities.” Tell me how giving parents’ access to 20 charter schools impedes learning. What the NAACP failed to mention in weak defense of its actions was that by filing the lawsuit with the teachers’ union, the NAACP prevented 4,100 teachers from losing their jobs and denied 7,000 children access to a better education. That is called hypocrisy!

If the NAACP really espoused Shirley Chisholm’s maxim as it wrote in its op-ed “there are no permanent friends, no permanent enemies, just permanent interests,” particularly when it comes to education of black kids, then the NAACP should be praising Republicans. GOP policies support charter schools, vouchers and programs like the DC Scholarship Program, which House Speaker John Boehner brought back to life after Obama killed the program which helped 1,700 black kids escape failing DC schools. NAACP does have permanent enemies, they include Republicans and those enlightened people against teachers unions and possibly the very black people it claims to protect! The one honest thing NAACP wrote in that flimsy op-ed was “we are independent actors.” Yes, you are but not for the good of the constituents you claim to serve.

This NYC school madness is another reason the NAACP has become an irrelevant organization, a distant shadow of the Civil Rights group which worked so assiduously during the 1950s and 1960s to combat racial discrimination. Sadly, it seems the NAACP can be bought by anyone at the expense of black people, who it is supposed to serve and in this case NAACP was bought by the teachers union. As former DC Councilmember Kevin Chavous noted Supreme Court Justice and former NAACP Chief Counsel Thurgood Marshall, who won the infamous 1954 Brown vs. Board of Education case, “must be shaking his head.”

News flash, school choice, vouchers, and charter schools, all are Republican policies, help BLACKS escape education ghettos and succeed in life. As my good friend Michelle Bernard says often “education is the great equalizer.” Stop being stupid my Black people and throwing your vote blindly to Democrats, get educated on who and what you vote for!
