GOP Needs to Show Balls, Call Obama’s Bluff & Let All Bush Tax Cuts Expire

President Obama’s offer to Republicans to save the country from its fiscal cliff plunge is one big joke. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said he “laughed” when Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, Obama’s cliff negotiator, unveiled it to him. Laughable is right when you consider the president’s outlandish request calls for tax hikes on higher earners, the one thing Republicans repeatedly have warned Obama, since day one of his presidency, were non-starters to any budget or deficit reduction talks.

Nevertheless, our “unserious” Commander-in-Chief put forth a deal to grab headlines rather than avert the January 1, 2013 sequestration deadline of  $1.2 million in automatic spending cuts and tax increases, which include the expiration of ALL the Bush tax cuts. The president’s plan demands $1.6 trillion in tax hikes over 10 years on higher earners, which includes small business owners also known as job creators! This includes $1 trillion by ending the Bush tax cuts for the “rich,” which includes the estate tax and hitting this group again with $600 million more in tax hikes next year. Big GULP! Obama’s philosophy is “you can never tax rich too much.”  They should just keep on earning and paying for Obama’s government largess.

But let’s get something straight, a married couple, who also  may be small business owners and/or have kids, making $250,000, isn’t rich and they shouldn’t pay nearly 40% of their hard earned income in federal taxes. Obama wants their tax rate to go from 35% to 39.6%  and leave the rates for everyone else lower. A single person’s who may be a small business owner, making $200,000 would see their rate rise from 33% to 35%. People who earn more money don’t do it by sitting on their butts all day so others can be rewarded with lower tax rates. Apparently, President Obama won’t be satisfied until higher earners are indentured servants to the state, paying 100% of their income in federal taxes.

The nation’s top 10% of earners pay 70% of all federal income taxes, the top 2% pay about 50% of all federal income taxes and nearly half of Americans pay no federal income. We can see who pays their fair share.

The president’s past three budgets have topped over $3 trillion. But Obama’s problem is taxing the rich won’t put a dent in the president’s $1 trillion deficits he racks up each year and the nation’s $16 trillion of rising debt, which brings us to spending. Raising taxes on higher earners, as the president wants to do, will only yield $1 trillion over 10 years. Extending the Bush tax cuts for the middle and lower brackets, according to Bob Woodward’s The Price of Politics cost $3.2 trillion. But Obama never talks about this number.

On top of his taxation warfare, Obama wants $50 billion in more spending lard, also known as stimulus including: extending the payroll tax reduction, unemployment benefits, preventing Medicare payments to doctors from being reduced and delaying the $110 billion in sequestration defense and domestic spending cuts for one year, etc. The icing on the president’s fiscal cliff offer is his request to be given supreme power to raise America’s debt ceiling without Congressional approval. To which, I’m sure both House Speaker John Boehner and Senator McConnell laughed like hyenas. Obama seems to be channeling President Morsi, who recently elevated himself to dictator of Egypt by declaring his actions were not subject to judicial review.

Conspicuously absent from the president’s proposal was any definitive spending cuts but rather vague promises to talk next year about cutting $400 billion from entitlement programs. Social Security and Medicare are on the road to bankruptcy and entitlements combined with Defense account for more than 50% of the government’s budget each year but Obama doesn’t want to address this reality. Spending is an addiction for Obama. When America needed jobs in 2009, Obama used his super majority with a Democrat controlled Congress to pass $2 trillion Obamacare, job killing Dodd Frank Wall Street reform legislation and $800 billion stimulus, none of which has stimulated the economy toward a real recovery.

America doesn’t have a revenue problem. We have a spending problem, which as Mitt Romney said “we can’t tax our way out of this mess.”  Republicans want to tackle the root of the problem, which is entitlement and tax reform, to generate more revenue. Last year, House Speaker John Boehner went through this same dance with an unserious Obama during last year’s debt ceiling negotiations. In 2011, Republicans and the president negotiated a deal of $800 billion in revenues through tax and entitlement reform that Obama walked away from, leaving the American people with the $1.2 trillion sequestration.

If lawmakers don’t stop the Bush tax cuts from expiring for all tax brackets and prevent the automatic spending cuts, the Congressional Budget Office continues to warn unemployment will rise to 9% and the country will fall into another recession. Small businesses have already started cutting back workers to avoid paying healthcare costs, as mandated by Obamacare or indicated they will pay the $2,000 fine per employee rather than comply with the healthcare law. If Mr. Obama has his way in drowning the “rich” in more taxes, small business owners, who file as individual taxpayers and fall into that category of $250,000 for married filers or $200,000 for individuals, will have another reason to lay off more workers.

Since the president seems determined not to negotiate with the opposing party and lead, as past presidents like Clinton and Reagan did, I think the Republicans need to tell Obama, “make our day” and be willing to let ALL the Bush tax cuts expire. Maybe then Obama will come to the table with an adult plan to put the country’s fiscal house back in order.

Punishing higher earners, some of which are small business owners who are job creators, with an even higher tax burden for working hard so others can get relief in the name of political gamesmanship is bad policy. Republicans need to show some balls and make the fiscal cliff “Obama’s problem,” as Speaker Boehner remarked July 12, 2011 during the first debt limit merry go round because Obama created this debt and doesn’t want to take responsibility for it.

Returned from Viet Nam in 70 and stayed drunk for almost two years. So disappointed in our politicians and military leaders. Civil rights were worth fighting for but some of the actors on all sides (including myself) left me with a bitter pill. The civil rights were for more than just the blacks and whites.

Being blessed with time, and modern technology I see much more clearly why brought us all together. It is so nice to have a young lady who is intelligent, and bold. You are now on my prayer list. I’m very impressed.

  2. Right on baby !!! Make sure they don’t have a parachute.

It will be so much fun to watch ABC, CBS, NBC, Chris Matthews and that Commie Rachel chic squirm

  3. Nichelle says:

Watched on c-span. You did not give any new information or have any strong points. I was not convinced that you believed strongly in what you were saying. Tearful about the black experience, yet you seem to think that the only black experience is whatever you experienced and that others should just get over it. Doesn’t seem as if you have… On the state of blacks its all because of broken family units. I can sorta see a contribution.. but really is that all?? Have you seen all the cases of wrongly incarcerated that are now being freed by the innocence project. New documentary coming out on the Central Park 5, maybe you should check it out. I want to see you do well and go far sister but I think you need to step back and take a look at yourself.. Get to know yourself a little better. You support people that, using your phrase… dont support childrden that “look like you” and think its okay if they stay after school and be janitors while others get to go home and study… Really Newt? Talking about kids… also Alan Keyes… That certified nut that could care less about people that look like you ,me and him.. Please girl

    Good Luck and God Bless.

The politicians are doing what they need to do to protect them and theirs. If the electorate is left out in the cold, its partially their fault for allowing it to happen and partially the media for failing the electorate. The jobs are gone because we were sold out. Politicians like Byron Dorgan and Fritz Howlings tried to stop it, but the truth is the house is burning

  5. John says:

I think you nailed it. We were sold out when the jobs were sent overseas in 1994. Hisotry generally separates the truth from the rhetoric. But when the media is controlling how current events are unfolding, its more difficult to see what is happening.

  6. Erevolent says:

I think you nailed it! All of this obfuscation could be cleared away if the media would simply report the facts. There is a debt problem and there is an economy problem. The two aren’t mutaully exclusive but it is smoke and mirrors to pretend that there is some magic formula for “getting serious” about fixing the debt without plunging the nation into recession. They are either going to “get serious” and wreck the economy or they aren’t. We were “sold out” when the jobs were sent over seas.

  7. Autonymous says:

I think the so-called leadership for the past few decades have been on this mission:

(State of the World 2012 Symposium videos from World Watch Institute.)

According to this guy Erik Assadourian we should be working 20 hour work weeks and making no more than $5,000 a year. I think WalMart already does that for their employees. (I wonder what Erik’s paycheck is…)

Might be a good time to switch to urban planning or at least get a govt job or start a green non-profit and hire some Che followers. They might even work for coffee beans – or weed, if you’re in Washington State. LOL!

  8. dan says:

If the politicians burn the house down we will all be out in the cold.Right now Obama @ dems are doing a good job of that and the republicans are standing around (voe is me). Unless the majority of the voters wake up soon the fiscal cliff will seem like a molehill , and the real disaster will strike. TIME TO WAKE UP !!!!!

  11. Noel says:

Sure, the Democrats won the election fair and square.

They won a competition in the political arena. They won a competition. Life is full of competitions. Even the begining of a life is a competition: the sperm that fertilizes the egg wins a competition. There is competition in sports and all walks of life.

Why then vilify competition in the business arena? Why then throw a monkey wrench in the workings of business?; choosing winners and losers; bail-outs, stimulus spending. Why does the government interfere in that arena when it’s proper function is to stand aside and be a referee?

  12. Linda says:

Well miss I saw you on a couple of talk shows and when you said you do not do talking points I almost fell on the floor laughing because they are the same talking points I heard from every republican who could not get to the microphones fast enough. I think you are like Ann Coulter say as many horrible things as possible so you can get on TV and make money that way. President Obama offered the republicans cuts they rejected them time and time again. $10 of cuts for $4 of tax revenue. Of course maybe if we wait another 30 years some of that trickle down will work. Keep making all of these states right to work and we will all be working for 7-8 per hour with no benefits. That is exactly what the republicans want. While I may not agree with all the Democrats do i sure believe they are looking out for the middle class and the poor. AND I KNOW THE REPUBLICANS ARE LOOKING OUT FOR THE RICH AND WALL STREET AND BIG BANKS

  13. Brandon says:

As an Independent I don’t understand all this foot dragging from the GOP about returning tax rates to the Clinton era. A time when we were racking up that budget surplus. Tax rates are the lowest they have been in 50 years. And from what I can see Dems want to raise the middle class rates as well, once the economy has sufficiently recovered. The protecting the rich, and holding the middle class hostage narrative that the left uses would seem logical by these actions. It is not a tax hike, it is simply letting what was supposed to be a temporary tax cut (unpaid for) expire. Thats it. If the GOP wants to rewrite the tax code then that is great, and would make for great debate. This is not the time for the GOP to dig in and risk hurting the country. One last point, the president talks about the rich simply paying their “fair share”. This characture of him as the socialist tax man rubbing his hands together is not supported by any speech he has made, or policy he has supported.

when you gonna paddle your hateful racist butt back to the jungle?

Don’t worry about transportation….they still have Vine transportation.

Grow up and cut the bitterness and hateful attitude.

  16. Brian J says:

I volunteered at the GOP convention in Tampa and back then the mood was upbeat. As I watched the race unfold I realized that Obama was attacking more than providing solutions and it was then that I knew the election was in jeopardy.

Mitt totally missed the underlying theme which was Socialism vs. Capitalizm and including minority as Crystal pointed out. Obama basically made his constituents dependent on him as “Food Stamp President” and other government entitlement programs. Mitt should have hammered home do you want to live in a free society or be subjected to government control?

I would like to know who Crystal would like to see run in 2016? Jeb Bush? Marco Rubio? Paul Ryan? or someone else?

  17. Ken says:

Just saw this poor pathetic woman on C-SPAN. There is so much wrong with everything she says, that it is hard to pick just one. She complains about black men in prison and suggests it has nothing to do with the current policies. If the police targeted white communities at the same level as blacks, the overwhelming use of drugs in those communities would impact more white incarcerations. She gets so upset, to the verge of tears, about the death of her grandfather and although she is vague on who shot him in one in one breath, but is clear it was two young blacks; in the other. She supports Newt. Nuff said. She says marriage is great, but she’s unwed. It goes on and on, but basically, she is a confused young woman stuffed with FOX News talking points and clearly is seeking the praise of “You’re cool. You’re not like all those other blacks!” Sad…

  18. Dora says:

P.S. I stated above that I am hispanic. I no longer call myself hispanic! The statement made that “the hispanics & blacks” won the vote for obama ruined the fact that I should be proud of my culture! I am American! I am not from mexico & those are the hispanic’s they are refering to. We were all clumped together. I am an American of this Country & still one of the fighters for OUR COUNTRY!

  19. Dora says:

Noel, I feel much like you in regards to the level of respect for Americans, but…….Not all Americans because yet here we are! We are the few (or so it seems) that know a difference and there are still some out there that are still trying to make a difference!! Petition2congress, comments, still doing the research… actualality still FIGHTING! I admire the people from Egypt that they actually have the balls to storm & protest for what Morsi is doing. That would be obamas next step for us! But it is starting to slap some of those obama supporters & their mouths (Council Woman JoAnn…give us the bacon? We got you the votes., what’s his name Gutierrez….you promised immigration as priority why aren’t you working on this?) Slap them all!!
Met a couple yesterday, white woman & a black man….she just lost her job & just last week he did as well. She was very upset but we talked & I told her I did not vote for obama (I am hispanic) & she replied nor did she but pointed to her man & said BUT he did, he voted on Color! He knows now! They are all going to turn on themselves & that pres. But sad part is they won’t know what to do or how to do it! At least we have insight & we have some directions inwhich to take to still continue this fight…..LET’S NOT STOP! As hopeless as it may seem. Start reaching out & continue to make calls & sign petitions! And PRAY, PRAY, PRAY!

if we go off the “fiscal cliff” that should satisfy everyone; taxes go up and spending is reduced. both parties can tell their minions that they stood up to the other side and got what they wanted. it’s theperfect political scenario; authority without responsibilty.

  21. All this gloom and doom statements because we have a black president. If you repubs wanted to win you would have put a better effort into it. You decided to not bring in more blacks and Hispanics. The old fashion white people should be afraid speeches don’t work anymore. Young whites can google and get the truth online, they, don’t just follow like lemmings as their parents did.

I heard you on Sirius satellite tonight on my weekly drive to the NOVA area. I was curious about you which led me to your site. My question for you is why did Bush and his Republican Congress cut taxes during the middle of 2 wars? No president in the history of this country has ever cut taxes during times of war. Why are you deleting my post? Don’t be afraid. Post this and answer my question in the public forum. When you censure posts, you really don’t believe in what you are saying.

  23. Will Hart says:

I was watching some of the recent budget testimony on CSpan and Obama’s proposal is so inadequate that even the Democratic-friendly Mark Zandi said that it comes well short (he advocated an additional 600 billion in cuts). If the President’s objective here was to make Speaker Boehner look reasonable – mission accomplished.

  24. JIM CLINE says:

  25. Allan Feinstein says:

Saw you on CSPAN – wanted to check you out. I enjoyed reading your stuff and your supporters. Thank goodness someone is willing to say how much they despise Americans. Cannot understand why you guys don’t win elections. Hope you found a country up to your standards – maybe secede?

Clever technique to confuse average tax rates with marginal rates – tell the folks that make over $250,000 that they will pay 40% taxes – probably will vote your way – they are probably not smart enough to know the higher rate apply to income over $250,000 – just show them your gift for telling them what victims they are.

  26. TheSaint says:

Can anyone here answer a question for me:

    1. Why did Republicans cut taxes during the middle of 2 wars? No president in the history of this country has ever cut taxes during times of war except for Bush & the Republican Congress.

  27. TerryToo says:

I don’t like blogs because they are usually not moderated/filtered to limit the published posts to the civil ones. But I just saw Crystal Wright on C-SPAN and must say that her values resonate well with my own, and her observations and perspective are keen indeed. If I knew how to get her a .Ppt presentation I developed of the McCain 2008 defeat, I would. While Victory Lab does a good job of explaining what it takes to win in a close race. The presentation of Mine “Comprehending Chaos” is the other side of the coin the Republicans need to mint.

  28. commonsense says:

If you google the tax rate history of the rich you will find 60% + the norm. Shocking isnt it? If you look at military spending you will find GW led the charge in debt growth. Imagine that. Republicans dont get it. Our 500,000 that it takes to service the debt this year is directly related to cut taxes, increased spending and the crashed economy by republican control of government. I would never defend the Obama administration and their response to the mess they walked into but the shrill and talking points demonstrated on this site will never win the middle who control the edge in elections.

  29. Pastor Sandi says:

An increase in the top tax rate ONLY increases the tax on income OVER the threshhold. If that threshhold is $250K, and the rate increases by 2%, the additional tax for a couple with taxable income of $300K is $1,000 (2% of $50K).

It is unfortunate that people do not understand this. Those who persist in making the tired argument that an additional $1,000 tax burden will KILL small business/job creators who make ONLY $300K are either hopelessly ill-informed or are purposely trying to deceive their ill-informed audience.

  30. Poor Teacher says:

Hi, I’m a teacher in Hawaii. I came to this blog because I saw the author supporting the recent GOP’s move to discourage people from voting with new laws proposed within days of the polls opening (Nice try). I read this post about money and noticed the major issue you supporters have is with helping people, mainly ones you don’t “like”. It amazes me how they hold so tightly to such flawed logic and forgive with a grain of salt the people (or rather corporations) that are guilty of far more corruption and loss of tax money than the citizens on food stamps. If your great at funneling your money offshore, well that’s a skill and you are successful! Need a little help with food off money that was already paid by one of your 7 previous jobs, well your just a mooch and need to pull up your bootstrap. And for you who think of Pres. Obama with hate in your heart because of color and then pretend it is for a political reason, well your easy to spot like good ol boy Noel here. Your kind is dying off and you can’t make enough babies to brainwash with hate to make up for it. Sure you can still live here but we barely hear you.
ps. I doubt I’ll ever come back here to read a reply

  31. John says:

Do u think calling the prez “obama boy” helps your argument? This one world government system that u r laying at the prez’s feet was explained to us by Bush I as the “New World Order”. Clinton picked up where he left off, then Bush II carried the ball onward and now Obama is taking his turn. The people can take this country back. However it won’t happen until people start to separate fact from fiction. CBC seems to have bought into the conservative hype. The people who are taking our nation from us are using the “divide and conquer” method to pit one group against another. Divide rich from poor; left from right; white from black; old from young. Socialism doesn’t work. Anybody who can read a history book ought to know it. However free and open capitalism, left unregulated will eventually leave all of the wealth in the hands of a few. While that may leave the few happy, it certainly will plant the seeds of social unrest. The American people aren’t dumb. We just need to understand that there is just as much hype and deceit coming from the right as is coming from the left.

  32. Franklin says:

If obama boy can’t push America into a one world governing system within 4 years…..

watch him make a movement for a 3rd term as POTUS…..

One thing obama boy has been EXACTLY correct about is…

the majority of people in America are now as dumb as rocks and can’t see past their own selfish desires….nor do they understand how their own country operates.

obama boy nailed the american dumbarses and is leading them around by their government freebies….

  33. Noel says:

I agree, Franklin; America is a Failed State. It’s going to be in a perpetual state of emergency.

If you reduce society to two able-bodied individuals, it becomes clear that it is wrong and evil to ‘tax’ one individual to give to the other. It’s called robbery. The individuals ought to deal with one another by TRADE; trading value for value…Capitalism.

America has been hesitatingly moving towards socialism. But thanks to Mister “yes we can” (i.e. Obama), full-blown socialism has arrived in America.

Characteristic of a failed state towards it’s last stages is a charismatic leader at it’s helm who is tacitly declared a God.

  34. Franklin says:

“If we can take the country back”

    Not going to happen.

America is no more. The complacency of the American people over the past 40 years has allowed their country to be taken from them.

They will never get it back because it no longer exist.

The “People” and the “Method” that made America what it once was no longer exist.

Future Americans will scratch their heads and sit in amazement at how the current American people could have sat back and done nothing while the greatest Country in the history of the World was dismantled and destroyed.

    America will never recover.

It will go the way of all the other over-populated countries of predominately poor people and bankrupt governments.
America will, by necessity, give up it’s Sovereignty as a Nation and come under the rule of the coming One World Governing System.
Which, obama is positioning and campaigning to become the first figurehead leader of this Governing system.

BTW….of all the countries on the planet where the people are rebelling against their government and rulers….
Americans should be the ones rebelling against their government.

Americans have become the biggest group of fools on the planet.

They have been defeated and given up their country without firing one shot.

  35. Jeff S. says:

Republicans are this position simply because leaders didn’t call out the President and Congress for NOT making a budget for years. Simply the most underreported thing of the last number of years.

  39. WalkerColt says:

I’ve been thinking about the inner workings of our politics and have come to a conclusion: Obama and the Democrats have nothing to lose.

If we go off the fiscal cliff, it will surely bring a new harsher recession, but the media will blame the House Republicans. Obama and Harry Reid will be “guiltless”. By 2014, the groundwork will be laid for the Dems to take the majority in the House. Winner? Obama and the Democrats.

If the Republicans compromise, Obama wins something, we still have an economic slowdown, the Republicans get blamed by the media (for not giving Obama “everything he needs to fix our economy”) and their conservative base will flee the RINOs, and the Dems get the House in 2014. Winner? Obama and the Democrats.

It’s all quite simple once you figure it out.

The people will get the government they deserve.

Americans have become the most foolish group of people on the planet.

Abraham Lincoln understood people and leadership better than FDR, JFK, LBJ, Clinton and all the obama boy democrats put together.

He understood what the current group of Republicans have not understood about their own message.

    Abe Lincoln,

You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.

You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.

You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.

You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling down the wage payer.

You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.

You cannot build character and courage by taking away a man’s initiative and independence.

You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves.

A plain a simple message is what a non-thinking people need.

Biting the hand that feeds you is simply foolishness.
