Obama to Blacks: Take Off Your Bedroom Slippers; Stop Complaining

I was stunned when I watched President Obama pander to and insult Blacks at this weekend’s Congressional Black Caucus Annual Dinner in Washington After droning on for almost ten minutes about billionaires and millionaires not paying their fair share in taxes and demanding Republicans give him another $447 billion to squander on a jobs bill, Obama invoked the Civil Rights Movement.

Obama, acting like a Black minister (eye roll here), shouts to the crowd towards the end of his remarks: “Even when folks are hitting you over the head, you can’t stop marching. Even when they’re turning the hoses on you, you can’t stop . . . We’re going to march on.” Then Obama refers to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the struggles of reaching the Promised Land.

This is insulting to blacks on so many levels mainly because Blacks aren’t in a fight for equality. Blacks won equal rights in 1964. The only thing Blacks are fighting for now is a jobs and the Promised Land is steady employment because black unemployment is 16.7% almost double the national average. Of course our good president never mentioned that and frankly I doubt he even cares about it.

As Congressman Allen West, the lone Republican member of the Congressional Black Caucus has said many times, “the laughable hypocrisy is that [Obama’s] big black bus isn’t going into the black communities.” What Obama does care about and the reason why he spoke at the CBC dinner is because Obama’s approval rating among blacks has plunged to 58% from 83%.

Obama concluded his speech in his preacher like dialect by borrowing King’s words of pressing on: “I’m going to press on for jobs. I’m going to press on for equality . . . I expect all of you to march with me and press on. Take off your bedroom slippers, put on your marching shoes. Shake it off. Stop complaining, stop grumbling, stop crying.”

The implications here that ALL Blacks are waiting for a government handout ; all Blacks wear bedroom slippers and/or are sitting on the couch not working is despicable and demonstrates how out of touch the nation’s first BLACK president really is. Why would the nation’s first Black president make such an incendiary statement telling blacks to “take off their bedroom slippers,” which conjures up a stereotypical image of Blacks being lazy. Can you imagine Obama saying the same thing to an all white crowd in Iowa?

Blacks will stop complaining when the 16.7% black jobless rate, the highest in 25 years declines and when Obama is voted out of office. Liberal or Conservative, blacks should be horrified by Obama’s speech. Blacks have “equality” Mr. President what they need along with the rest of Americans is jobs. This is the most insulting rhetoric I’ve heard in a long time.

Left wing liberals are always so quick to say more Republican politicians utter racist gaffes than their liberal kin. Well, I disagree with that and for the record I condemn incendiary rhetoric from whomever the source. What liberals mean to say is the vast left wing media calls attention to Republicans when they make racist remarks but rarely if ever puts a spot light on a liberal for doing the same.

Let’s see how the liberal news media attempts to white-wash these condescending, Obama’s racially charged remarks.

I have never seen someone trying so desperately to pander. “Take off your bedroom slippers”? What BRAINIAC thought that that would be a good rallying cry? Obama might as well have just said “get up off your porch stoops”.

Stop the madness. With us as blacks we complain, but what are we doing to solve our own jobless rate. I live in California, where black people don’t even want to live in the same neighborhood as one another, where they can’t even get a business started without it closing down soon after. We have the 1st Black President, and all we want to do is critize. There have always been blacks who had no love for their own people….are you saying that is what President Obama is all about, what about us. How much help do we give each other, how often when we arrive in the corporate world do our attitudes change, and we start thinking that we have arrived and to heck with every other black person that is still struggling. You have people like Oprah who instead opeing a school for black women here she goes to South Africa (I applaud her efforts), but we as a people need uplifting here in this country as well. We know that white people are not going to do it as a whole, but we need to be the one doing it. Our people did it when they were slaves and they paved the way for us, but we have forgotten that, we have let other identify who we are instead of identifying ourselves. We are the people that help made this country what it is by the sweat of our ancestors lives. We need to grab our children from the street and teach them the rich heritage that they have in this country as well as Africa, we need to go back to our spiritual ways. Our ancestors were God fearing people, we have become so much like the man that we have become stagnate. Our history and contributions cannot be denied because they are a part of the history of this country and it is written and be accessed by us, but do we do that, NO! We rather complain about President Obama’s remarks and instead of really searching inside ourselves and asking ourselves if on some level he was talking truths we whether do to him what the white man is doing? Fortunately, for us we have freedom of speech, and as much as we take the freedom of speech that wealthy white people have to speak about us on the negative as often as they can to keep people alienated here we go helping. Good luck with that! God bless you. It is time for us to put God back into the picture even when no one else will. God is not a hater of anyone even though people want it to be so, but without him this is what happens, WE WILL NOT WIN! Love and peace to all.

I know I will get blasted for this, but it must be very easy for Crystal to be a “Black Conservative Chick” when she certainly looks extremely Caucasian. As an enrolled member of the Rosebud Sioux tribe with 25% blood quantum, I also have been able to get through life easier than my full-blooded relations and my “non-visibility” has also given me the opportunity to hear truly racist comments against First Nations people as I blend it more as a White Woman (as does Crystal) than a First Nations woman – so of course it is easy for her to say what she does in these blog columns – she cannot really experience the “Black” woman’s point of view due to her own personal “non-Black” appearance – as I have found out in my own life as a mixed-blood woman who looks “White.”

Who told you “black folks won equality in 1964″….really? It’s unfortunate that you are unaware that the real world is still riddled with the injustice of racism and hate for people of color. As a successful black women with a thriving law practice, I’m reminded daily that racism is alive and well! Politics aside, we have not overcome! Life is not about speeches and broken promises from our government, it’s more about the access and availability of the American Drean to those that have been systematically disenfranchised! Do you believe that Newt Gingrich keeps that in mind?

  16. Henry M. Carter says:

The President was on point with stating the we must stop complaining. We must learn to do for ourselves. With a collective spending power of 1 trillion dollars annually why are we not building grocery stores, selling hair to ourselves, building clothing factories and automotive factories. The Korean opened a automotive factory in West Point,GA called KIA. They are not begging for jobs. They are creating jobs. Yes we are in a heck of a condition, but God does not change the condition of a people until they seek to change it themselves. In the words of my late Grandfather Rev B.C Carter “If you can’t find a job, make one” RISE UP

You sent a letter to my daughter at my address, which I read. I also was insulted by your remark “to a all white crowd in Iowa”. That was as ignorant,as the remark that Obama made!! I am a 55 year old woman that was married to a black man for 15 years, I have 4 biracial children and 6 black grandchildren. I am a racist by no means, but it just angers me when race is brought into everything!!! Obama made the comment….not white people!!

  18. I am an old white lady (79 y.o.) and I was insulted by Obama’s bedroom slipper speech. In fact he looks more like an idiot every day. He has been a one man army trying to destroy harmony between the races. Old ladies are discriminated against too, fat people (Letterman is already making jokes about Christie), ugly people, short people, and so on. Lets get this loser out and put Cain in.

  19. karen meer says:

It is an affront to ANY group to be told they are lazy en masse. The “bedroom slippers” comment implies that all are sitting around on the couch, with no care as to what the future is. An insult no matter how you look at it.

Dan, how racist and centrist she is? You think the centrist position in America is racist?

And you are inviting CBC to Iowa to hear what? If Obama will insult an audience there too? And if he does what would that prove? Honestly, I don’t undertand your point at all.

  26. Dan Hoyt says:

“Can you imagine Obama saying the same thing to an all white crowd in Iowa?”

Your own comments are racist, lady. Consider this your invitation to come to Iowa, in particular, Des Moines. You’ll see that we have beauty and diversity in our landscape and our culture.

You’ll then realize just how racist and centrist you are. You may even see that the name of your blog is racist. :o

He talk bad to Black People and want their votes. He is not fooling all Black People, and will not get their vote. Because he watch his tongue while speaking to other ethnic groups. Another put down to Black People by calling us lazy (bedroom slipper, comment). People have you ever heard him speak to other group in that manner?? The answer is No..

  28. Christine says:

President Obama, “take off your bedroom slipper ias talking arrogant and condescending to Black People.
He does not deserve speak at Dr King Memorial. I plan not to listen to his phony show, he is using Dr King to deceive Black People. With 3 wars, and his administration invasion of Libya.

Great article. I TIVO’d his speech and the second time I closed my eyes and thought I was listening to Jesse Jackson again. The Reverend-in-Chief is making a BIG mistake talking like this. If a white republican made this speech, he would be acused of being a member of the KKK.

Fist “black” president? He who controls the meaning of words controls the outcome of the debate.

When Nobel Prize winning poet Tony Morrison can write an October 1988 New Yorker article titled “Clinton as the first black president”, then what is “black”? When the NAACP calls the black conservative Kenneth Gladney, “not black enough”, and “not a brother” then what is “black”? When Time magazine’s Jack White calls Supreme Court Justice Thomas, “the scariest of all the hobgoblins”, saying “Washington seems to be filled with white men who make black people uneasy”, than what is “black”? And when Obama, a man whose mother is Caucasian, can tell us in a widely read autobiography that in his youth he struggled with his racial identity before *deciding* to be black, what is “black”?

When Bill Maher, during a panel discussion on HBO complains that Obama’s policies are “half-assed” “because he
